The Project would add patches of young forest to a largely undisturbed, mature landscape to improve habitat diversity and forest resilience. Restoring young forest habitat is expected to benefit many declining Southern Appalachian wildlife species that rely on shrubby cover and canopy gaps.
Location
The project area is located in Fannin and Gilmer Counties on the eastern side of the Cohutta Wildlife Management Area. Portions of the Pinhoti National Recreational Trail and Benton MacKaye Trail as well as Jack’s River Fields Campground occur within the project area.
