Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest — Project Detail

The primary objective of this project is to restore and maintain native forest communities, reduce stand density in pine and pine-oak stands to improve forest health, expand prescribed fire use, and enhance terrestrial and aquatic habitat diversity.

The Chattooga River Ranger District is proposing activities to improve watershed conditions, including water quality, and to promote both game and non-game aquatic organism habitat, including native brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis).

Windstream proposes to install or replace existing fiber optic communications infrastructure, including but not limited to installation or replacement of underground fiber, utility cabinets, fiber on existing above-ground utility lines, guylines, and poles already supporting wired infrastructure.

Windstream proposes to upgrade and install fiber optic cable and supporting infrastructure along existing road rights-of-way and utility corridors on NFS lands of the Chattahoochee-Oconee NF in White and Habersham counties, Georgia on the Chattooga River Ranger District.

Windstream proposes to install or replace existing fiber optic communications infrastructure, including but not limited to installation or replacement of underground fiber, utility cabinets, fiber on existing above-ground utility lines, guylines, and poles already supporting wired infrastructure.

Proposed actions include maintenance and rehabilitation of existing assets to include water supply line replacements, toilet replacements, lake retaining wall repairs and beach hardening, shelter repairs, picnic area replacements, campground maintenance and signage replacement.

The purpose of the project is to enhance stream habitat conditions for trout and other aquatic species, which would move these areas toward the desired conditions stated in the Forest Plan.

This is to continue burning of the Chestnut Mountain Burn Unit aimed at wildlife habitat improvement. This unit was last burned in 2015/2016.

The District is considering an application from Georgia Gwinnett College for the construction and subsequent use of a research field station located within the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area.

The Chattooga River Ranger District is proposing to close the entirety of Panther Creek Recreation Area to public use for a period of up to two years to protect human health and safety due to damage that was sustained during Hurricane Helene.
