Mendocino National Forest — Project Detail

The project would use prescribed fire, manual and mechanical treatments to reduce fuel loads and mitigate future impacts of wildfire across National Forest System lands within the Mendocino National Forest, but outside of designated wilderness areas.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company proposes the construction of a power line to replace a power line line lost in the 2020 August Complex Fire. This power line will supply power to a telecommunications site at Round Mountain.

The purpose of this project is to reduce the extent and spread of invasive plant infestations that threaten wildland values in a timely and cost-effective manner, while protecting human health and ecosystem functions.

The Forest Service is proposing fuels reduction, reforestation, and thinning of green tree patches along Forest Highway 7 from the Forest boundary 28.5 miles west towards Plaskett Meadows. The proposed project area is approximately 9,575 acres.

Salvage timber harvest within the footprint of the 2018 Ranch Fire, in the vicinity of Green Flat Camp.

Re-establish native riparian vegetation along Middle Creek (upstream downstream and adjacent to Middle Creek Campground)by planting native plants and protecting it using fencing in order to promote stream bank stability and enhance habitat.

Annual maintenance and storm-proofing on various roads.

Maintenance to the Black Diamond Type Conversion, which would restore the type conversion to its former size while reducing the threat of catastrophic wildfire, improving wildlife and plant diversity, and increasing grazing capacity of the range.

The Forest Service is proposing reforestation Forest Route M5 previously analyzed under the M3, Felkner, M5 Roadside Hazard Tree Management Project.

Reroute approximately 350 feet of trail 35 that is currently difficult to maintain and impacting water quality.

The purpose of the project is to restore and reforest acres of burned area as a result of the 2018 Ranch Fire.

Provide the land owner with a roads special use permit making it a private road that will enable them to perform maintenance on the road to allow for access.

The Forest Service is requesting a Letter of Permission from the Army Corps of Engineers for ongoing maintenance of the boat ramp. The boat ramp has become inundated with deposited benthic substrate that needs to be removed to allow river access.

The Forest Service proposes site preparation and reforestation in the area of Letts Lake and Mill Valley campgrounds.

Hazard tree felling and removal is proposed to reduce public safety hazards along portions of certain roads, trails and facilities within nine national forests. We expect to complete three zone-level analyses and nine decisions.

The Forest Service proposes to repair the Upper Letts Lake Dam that was found to be structurally compromised after the 2018 Ranch Fire. Lake will be drawn down to existing coffer dam and Dam embankment, outlet, spillway, and stilling basin repaired.

The United States Forest Service (USFS) proposes installing an 18-hole disc golf course (with baskets, tee pads, and interpretive signs) in the restored oak habitat section of the RBRA.

This project proposes to build a new Work Center to house the Feather River Interagency Hotshot Crew (FRIHC) and one engine module displaced when the Brush Creek Work Center burned in the North Complex Fires, during 2021.

Re-issue grazing permits for these allotments.

Foliar application of herbicide to the invasive broom species in specific locations within the area of the 2018 Ranch Fire on the Mendocino National Forest.

The purpose of the cameras is to aid in wildfire detections across the forest. Cameras would be located at High Glade and Anthony Peak Lookouts and on Goat Mtn on the Mendocino NF. Stand-alone systems will be utilized no ground disturbance required.

To predict weather conditions in the area and use this data in combination with other data sources to determine if fire risk and if there is a need to shut off power.

Remove culverts and hydrologically stabilize road that is located in Sanhedrin Wilderness. (Formerly listed in MNF Supplemental SOPA)

The Upper Lake Ranger district, Mendocino NF is proposing to decommission approx. 9.5 miles of roads within wilderness in order to meet the intent of wilderness legislation and policy and to improve watershed health.

Forest restoration treatment that reduces the risk/extent of insect/disease infestations, increase the resistance and resilience of stands to current and future infestations/epidemics, and promote timber production and improve wildlife habitat.

In response to a region-wide outbreak of mountain pine beetle, the Mendocino National Forest is proposing to apply the pesticide SPLAT Verb, a behavior disrupting pheromone called verbenone to sixteen rust resistant sugar pine trees.

A comprehensive river management plan (CRMP) is required by the Wild and Scenic River Act of 1968 for each segment to provide for the protection of the river values. The CRMP will focus on protecting the river's free-flowing condition & water quality

Restrict use on a segment of Trail 17N84 from its current multi-use status (road/trial) to only trail use.

Commercial thinning and fuel treatments in forest vegetation; fuel treatments in hardwood and chaparral vegetation. Treatment areas strategically placed to reduce severity and spread of wildfire in southwest part of Late Successional Reserve RC309.

Recover the value of hazard trees that have been cut in the Sugarfoot Glade Campground by offering the trees to the public for purchase.

Restore approximately 1000-1500 feet of unsustainable trail that over time and use now have eroded soils, resulting in cascading runoff from upslope delivering sediment into Mill Creek.

Reroute Trail 40 to prevent further damage to cultural and historical resources and maintain the functionality of the trail system. Construct a new segment of 1500-1900 feet of trail; close existing 1200 foot section of trail.

Special Use permit to allow for the construction, operation, and maintenance of a radio vault and antenna tower for 2-way communication, in an existing radio repeater site.

Establish fuel treatments on approx. 360 acres, to provide habitat, community and infrastructure protection, and enhance firefighting efforts. Treatments include: chipping, mastication, hand thinning/piling/burning, machine piling and underburning.

Replace several permits with a single permit to cover occupancy, use, maintenance for ~15 miles of existing aerial and buried telecommunications lines.

Commercial thinning of 60-80 yr old plantations to reduce inter-tree competition and susceptibility to abnormal levels of bark beetle infestation. Stands are currently exibiting initial increases in bark beetle infestation levels.

Install 2 fire rings and several picnic tables

Treatment of fuels on private land under Steven's Authority. Treatments include 86 acres of thinning for forest health, 56 acres of thinning for fuel reduction and 32 acres of a fuel break. California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)is completed.

Exterminate tamarisk infestation using chain saws to cut Tamarisk and expose the stumps for treatment with Garlon 4 with direct application. Follow-up monitoring and treatments will be required for 3-5 years.

Create a 300 ft wide by 4.5 mile long fuelbreak along Twin Rocks Ridge utilizing road 22N02. Would protect resources and infrastructure in the Twin Rocks Ridge area.

Removal of buildings and other infrastructure at the Fouts Springs facility and restore back to a natural setting.

Reissue a special use permit (SUP) authorizing private landowners to maintain a spring and pipeline that occurs on Forest Service land. The first permit issued was 5 for years and is now expired. The next permit will be for 20 years.

Reroute approximately 0.45 miles of trail from private property onto Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land and maintenance of approximately 1.4 miles of trail on BLM land.

Create 300-600 foot wide shaded fuelbreak and thin plantations along rd 24N04 between M2 and Ball Rock using combination of mechanical and hand treatments; option for biomass removal depending upon market conditions.

Re-issue a special use authorization for approx. 950 ft. of 1 3/4" water transmission line (with a 25ft. buffer on either side of the line) from PG&E leased property to an un-named spring on FS property. Both spring and line under permit since 1986.

Understory burning if forest vegetation to reduce fuel hazard and risk of stand-replacing fire.

Renewal of a 20 year special use permit for the purpose of operating and maintaining an adult conservation camp.

Various improvements to abate sanitation and resource damage problems associated with dispersed camping in the area of the vacant Grizzly Flat administrative site.

Issue a 10-year special use authorization for 1,740 ft of 1 inch water transmission line from Shields Creek down to the NW corner of Miller/Ast property (co-owners). The waterline used to exist but burned in the North Pass Fire.

Issue a 5-year special use permit for three Enduro events to be held every year for five years. An Enduro is a one day organized motorcycle event.

Reduce hazard fuels on ~185 acres of plantations and natural forest stands surrounding Sugar Springs dispersed campsite. Use mechanical and hand treatments to cut and pile understory vegetation; burn piles during low hazard weather conditions.

Reforest about 300 acres within the North Pass Fire that were deforested and require artificial regeneration to establish mixed conifer stands. Includes non-mechanical site preparation,planting native tree species, and follow-up release treatments.

Pull small plants by hand and weed wrench; cut larger plants to ground level with chainsaw and cover with plastic to kill resprouts by solarization.

Reroute approximately 0.25 mile of trail 44 to avoid private property.

Reroute about 1.25 miles of trail to avoid crossing private land.

Close and rehabilitate ~100 ft of OHV trail and construct a ~400 ft route around the closed section to provide for better drainage and to bring the trail to rated difficulty level.

The Forest Service was a cooperating agency, assisting the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in that Agency's geothermal leasing analysis and decision. The BLM issued a record of decision on 12/17/2008.

Conduct hand site-preparation and conifer planting to reforest 43 acres within the 2008 Back Fire. This project covers a different area of the Back fire than the previous project of same name (PALS#32460)

Amend special use permits to set the expiration dates to coincide with the expiration dates of associated recreation residence authorizations due to expire in 12/31/2028

Prevent spread of root rot by applying borax to stumps of trees after they are cut.

Dcommission 3 segments of OHV Trail #2 (~655 ft) to eliminate sediment discharge to E Fk Middle Creek; construct ~200 ft reroute that provides trail connectivity and protects water quality.

Hand removal of small concrete water supply dam from tributary of W Fk Middle Creek. The dam was abandoned as a water supply in 1987, but never removed. Removal will restore natural stream flow and hydrology.

Thin brush & trees, remove slash from around 10 to 12 identified rust-resistant sugar pine to protect from fire; police aborted cones to reduce insect damage of future cone crops; install sheet metal bands to prevent pilfering of cones by squirrels.
