The Grandfather, Appalachian, and Pisgah (GAP) Restoration Project proposes actions to restore fire-adapted sections of Pisgah National Forest and reduce wildfire risk to resources and nearby communities.

Provide programmatic direction for a standard set of treatments that promote the regeneration and survival of woody forest vegetation within the natural range of historic variation for a variety of ecosystem benefits.

The proposed action is to use prescribed burning on six areas, totaling approximately 16,681 acres in Macon County, North Carolina.

Replacement of English Chapel Bridge due to damage from Tropical Storm Fred

The Croatan Ranger District proposes to permit the City of Havelock to perform bank stabilization and road maintenance work on McCotter Canal and the adjacent access road on National Forest System lands.

The project area proposed for treatment contains approximately 3,000 acres of the Croatan RD. Proposed vegetation management activities would improve forest health, wildlife habitat, and restore natural forest desired conditions.

Trails management project in Linville Gorge Wilderness. Originally scoped as one project that was split into two separate decisions.

A Watershed Restoration Action Plan was created for Catheys Creek Watershed, this project is proposing to implement the actions proposed in this WRAP.

Trail management within the Island Creek area. In addition, the trailhead parking lot would be reconstructed.

Streambank stabilization along Davisdon River from the Pisgah Fish Hatchery downstream to the confluence with Looking Glass Creek - rehab/improve river entry points

Issue a special use authorization to the Nantahala Fire and Rescue Squad to construct a 20' x 6' boardwalk and steps on NFS lands at the shore of Nantahala Lake, Nantahala Ranger District, Macon County, NC, and connect to a slip for a S&R boat.

Create a half-acre temporary gravel parking lot for accessing John Rock area trails near the parking area for the Cat Gap Trailhead which is temporarily closed for construction.

Disposal of twelve bath houses at Davidson River Campground to be replaced by eleven newly constructed accessible bath houses. Work to include associated water and sewer line replacement.

The proposed action includes trail maintenance in Graveyard Fields and Graveyard Ridge area; regeneration of red spruce; stand improvement treatments in recently planted red spruce in Flat Laurel; and stream restoration along Yellowstone Prong.

The proposed action is to move a 4,900 foot segment of the existing overhead power line that crosses USFS and reinstall it on a series of new power poles within the NCDOT ROW along NC Hwy 28 near the Almond Community in Swain County, NC.

The proposed action is to conduct mechanical and chemical treatments to release stump sprouts of hard mast-producing trees that were top-killed during arson fires in fall of 2016.

Identify and recommend to the US Capitol landscape architect several 60-80 foot tall evergreen trees for the selection of one to be cut and transported to the US Capitol.

This project seeks to improve Catheys Creek watershed - the sole source of water for the City of Brevard. Proposed improvements include stream restoration, stream crossing improvements, road maintenance and non-native invasive plant treatments.

Proposed broadcast prescribed fire within the identified unit boundaries during the dormant season initially and returning every third year. The only ground disturbance necessary will be blading of FSR 6521 and 6522 off of Lassiter Mill Rd.

Implement stream stabilization features, riparian buffers, revegetation, and general trail maintenance on several sites within Panthertown Valley that are currently degraded.

Removal of dilapidated shed from Rattler Ford Campground.

Reroute existing trail away from the shoreline of Fontana Lake. Existing trail has slid into the lake in two separate locations along this stretch. Proposed reroute will be approximately 1,000 feet.

Installing and maintaining gates at mine openings

Variable density crown touch thinning in 14 stands to improve Golden Wing Warbler habitat and favor desirable tree species appropriate for the ecological zone.

Demolition of buildings at this site due to safety. Buildings are not being used.

The project proposes repairs to Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads (ERFO) Sites on NFSR 982 Mortimer Piedmont NC-982-6.61 and NC-982-1.82. We are proposing the re-alignment of both the stream and road.

This project is the prescribed burning of the following units on the Appalachian Ranger District: Victor Fields (1&2), Bowling Green Extension, Joe Berry Extension, Max Patch, and Cherry Creek.

Installation of one gate outside of a mine in Clay County to protect bat hibernacula and limit access.

Decommission 14 campsites and all associated amenities in flood hazard area, as well as campground's water system. Sites would be rehabilitated to a natural state.

Uwharrie Ranger District is proposing to renovate the Uwharrie Hunt Camp.

The Croatan Ranger District is proposing to improve and restore timber and wildlife habitat through various management treatments.

The project seeks to to repair three sites along Bullpen Road (FS 1178) at approximately mile post 2.11, 2.74, 3.40 where storm events from 2019, 2020, and 2021 resulted in fill slope failures and damage to the Forest Service Road.

The proposed amendment will allow NCWRC to build a new wildlife depot and shop on approximately 1 acre of NFS lands.

This amendment would allow for a new powerline to be constructed on approximately 2 acres of National Forest System lands (NFS).

The proposed action includes a combination of stand improvement, commercial thinning, regeneration, and prescribed burning to reduce the risk and increase the resilience to wildfire.

Proposal is to prescribe burn about 2,000 acres in the Seven Mile Ridge area to improve habitat diversity and reduce fuels.

Due to factors including health and safety hazards, engineering assessment, sustainability, AT management plans, and partner input, a proposal is being considered to decommission the shelter and pit privy and replace with a covered picnic shelter.

Installation of double vault toilet in the Harmon Den Campground.

The Croatan Ranger District is considering approving a new Special Use permit for the Town of Cape Carteret. This Special Use Permit would allow for the entity to construct 1.1 mile of multi-use path along NC 58 and Taylor Notion Road.

The proposed action includes trail construction and rerouting of sections of trail on Butter Gap and Long Branch Trails as well as construction of a connector trail between Cove Crk Campground and Daniel Ridge Rd on former system trail.

This project is proposing to conduct understory maintenance burning to reduce hazardous fuels and improve wildlife habitat. The proposal includes prescribed burning on 33 acres of USFS land, enabling NC burn adjacent private lands.

Project was combined with the Wood run project under the new name of Lomax Resource Management Project.

The Silver Mine Group Camping facility will be decommissioned by removing buildings and structures. The Silver Mine creek will be restored by improving floodplains and bank stability and removing aquatic organism barriers

NCDOT project for the widening of US70 and construction of the new Croatan Ranger District Office.

The redesign and realignment for the Hwy 24/27 trailhead is necessary due to the widening of Hwy 24/27 by North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) which will result in impacts to the Hwy 24/27 trailhead and loss of the overflow parking.

This project is the prescribed burning of two units: Scraggy Ridge and Mill Ridge

Aerial treatments of an exotic moth known as Lymantria dispar using mating disruption, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, Nucleopolyhedrosis virus, or their combination.

The proposed action is to issue a road easement to NCDOT for bridge replacement.

Revision of the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs Land Management Plan (Forest Plan)

This project is to improve management and maintenance of approximately 5 miles of roads including National Forest Service Roads (NFSRs) 576 (Moccasin Creek Rd), 553 (Dutch John Rd), and 6584 (Green Gap Rd).

The proposal is to construct a pedestrian bridge over the Davidson River linking Brevard to the Pisgah NF. The City will own and maintain the bridge. Potential activities include clearing, grading, bridge construction and relocation of power-lines.

This project would reduce accumulated fuels for suppressed seed beds, improve the watershed, and increase the low forb content and line of sight for wildlife in the area.

The proposed action is to maintain existing wildlife fields across North Carolina through the use of mechanical treatments, prescribed fire, and herbicides to control undesirable vegetation.

The proposed action is to relocate approximately 1,750 linear feet of power line from the south side of U.S. Hwy 28 to the north side of Hwy 28 in the Meetinghouse Mountain area of Graham County, NC.

Issue a special use permit to allow vehicular access to a tract of private land in Graham County, NC, that has been used by the same family since the early 1900s.

The proposed action is to improve transportation options from Robbinsville to Almond in Graham County to provide the transportation infrastructure necessary for the well-being of local and regional traffic.

The proposed action is to issue an amended SUP for the Coastal Regional Solid Waste Management Authority to expand their existing transfer station located on the Croatan Ranger District.

The Forest Service is proposing to restore access to FSR 204 by reconstructing an existing, closed system road (FSR 209) to a maintenance level (ML) 3. Proposed road reconstruction would be approximately 2.1 miles along FSR 209.

This project proposes to install (via lashing to existing French Broad Electric utility lines, no ground disturbance) approximately 4.4 miles (approximately 5 acres with a 10 foot special use permit width) of fiberoptic telecommunication line.

Amend an existing special use authorization issued to AT&T to improve telecommunication service in Macon and Swain counties by installing new equipment at the tower farm site at Cowee Bald on the Nantahala Ranger District.

Issue a new special use authorization for the Alarka Creek Marina and the Greasy Branch Marina, which are located on National Forest System lands on the Nantahala Ranger District in Swain County, NC, which have been permitted for >40 years.

Amend an existing special use authorization issued to Duke Energy to improve telecommunication service by installing new / removing old equipment at the tower farm site at Cowee Bald, National Forest System lands, Macon County, NC, Nantahala RD.

Issue a special use authorization issued to Haywood Electric Membership Corporation to improve telecommunication service by hanging approximately 8,100 feet of new fiber optic line telecommunication line in the Scaly Mountain area of Macon County, NC

The proposal is to close access to a vertical mine shaft near Pol Miller Branch on NFS lands in Macon County, NC which will improve the condition and safety for forest visitors and for the terrestrial wildlife species that inhabit the mineshaft.

The proposed action is to conduct multi-resource management treatments on the Nantahala Ranger District in Macon County, North Carolina.

Adding and modifying trails to create a new system of connecting trails in the area of Old Fort, NC.

The Croatan Ranger District of the National Forests in North Carolina is considering a 5-year special use permit for the Tideland 24 Recreation Event on National Forest System (NFS) lands. The permit would cover a 24-hour ultramarathon foot race.

The proposed action is to amend an existing special use permit for Randolph Telephone (UWH404402) to allow for the installation of approximately 4,600 feet of fiber optic telecommunications line across tract U-1241 on the Uwharrie RD.

The proposed action is to grant a special use authorization to Duke Energy to make improvements to the power generation and distribution system that crosses National Forest System lands in Macon County, North Carolina.

The proposed action includes modification of the WLOS special use permit to allow repair and upgrades to the tram system which is used to access the tower.

The proposed action is to construct a new primitive cabin that is code and accessibility compliant near the existing historic Swan Cabin on National Forest System lands in Graham County, NC.

Allow the West Carteret Water Corporation to place 2 more water wells and approximately 4000 feet of additional waterline with power on the Croatan Ranger District in the locations identified in their existing permit issued in August of 1989.

relocation of the Appalachian Trail (AT) in two places near Beauty Spot Gap on the south side of Unaka Mountain, in Mitchell County, North Carolina. This will provide approximately 1300 feet of new trail.

The proposed action is to remove American beech infected or susceptible to Beech Blight and promote red spruce and Fraser fir. Activities include underplanting of spruce and fir, rehab disturbed areas and creating/expanding canopy gaps.

The purpose of this project is to replace a functionally obsolete bridge with one that meets current design standards. Construction would be staged so that detours are not needed.

The proposal includes relocations of existing trails and new trail construction which will provide recreation experiences to users of all levels through loop opportunities of varying lengths and difficulties and a sustainable trail system.

The reach of the Davidson River proposed here for enhancement is located below the bridge crossing that accesses the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education extending downstream ~200 meters.

NC DOT has proposed widening from two lanes to four lanes of NC 24/27 from NC 73 at the Pee Dee River to the Troy Bypass. Approximately 2.7 miles of this 11 mile project are located on Forest Service lands.

The proposed action is to conduct prescribed burning on approximately 1,200 acres in Mitchell County, NC.
