Rio Grande National Forest — Project Detail

The analysis area includes 950 acres of total harvest within the 1,708-acre analysis area. The project analysis area contains stands typed as Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, and Engelmann spruce. The analysis area contains multiple biotic stressors.

Trails La Garita, Fitton, Lower Groundhog, Pole/West Lost decommissioning and/or closing eroding and unsustainable routes to repair or assign alternative routes.

Wolf Creek Ski Area proposed to construct a catwalk/ski trail to access additional skiable acres. The project is identified in the MDP.

Decommissioning a redundant road

Construct LTPBRs along Osier Creek to reconnect the channel to the floodplain, prevent erosion and encourage riparian plant growth.

It is proposed to authorize the use of various non-system motorized routes used by the Santa Maria Reservoir Company for maintenance and operation of their water systems or access to private property.

It is proposed to authorize an existing water diversion, spring box, and approximately 1,150 feet of buried waterline. The system is in place and there is not a proposal to increase the scope or intensity.

The Forest will install a wildlife safe perimeter fence to assist with cattle grazing management at the Trujillo Meadows Campground. The length of the fence will be 0.33 miles. The fence will be laid down when cattle grazing is finished.

The proposed action consists of sanitation harvest of no more than 250 acres of dead/dying, infested/currently uninfested Douglas-fir trees affected by Douglas-fir beetle and Western spruce budworm.

The proposal is to construct a spring box for the existing spring and pipe water to a single fiberglass tank. There is a need for a spring box that would transfer water from the spring to the watering tank via a short pipeline.

The Forest proposes to install restoration structures in North Decker Ck. to stabilize/improve stream banks/erosion and sediment flow, riparian/floodplain condition, benefitting Gunnison Sage Grouse habitat. No Wilderness is included in the project.

The Forest proposes to install Low Tech Process Based Restoration structures in Houselog Ck. to stabilize/improve stream banks/erosion and sediment flow, riparian/floodplain condition, and benefitting Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout habitat.

The Forest will install a new vault toilet at the Adams Fork trailhead to reduce impacts from elevated dispersed use. The Upper South Fork restroom will be relocated. Both projects will help manage human waste and watershed concerns.

NRCS is proposing to place a new SNOTEL weather station near Elwood Pass.

The purpose of this project is to provide water for livestock. The need is to establish water in areas to distribute livestock to areas on the allotment that do not have water but have forage.

The Rio Grande National Forest proposes to initiate multiple treatments within the Cantonment Creek and Luders Creek Drainages,including prescribed fire, salvage, precommercial thin, intermediate harvest and regeneration harvest.

The Conejos Peak Ranger District is proposing to treat up to 13,200 acres of the 51,460-acre project area. The Conejos Peak Ranger District has identified a need to improve overall forest health in the project area.

The purpose of this project is to implement timber harvesting for the purpose of timber production (regulated harvest) and sanitation-salvage harvesting to utilize commercially valuable hardwood and softwood species within the project analysis area.

The proposed action consists of salvage harvest of approximately 250 acres of dead/dying Engelmann spruce within stands adjacent to and surrounding the Oyler parcel located on NFSR 681.

Proposed construction of 8,000 sq ft building to house and maintain FS fleet.

Beaver Dam Analogue (BDA) structures will be installed across 3 general locations to reduce soil erosion and improve riparian and fisheries habitat, where stream conditions are degraded.

It is proposed to reissue to Mr. Cochran's driveway permit to the current owner of the property, Cochran's Sky Hi Camp, LLC for the remainder of the term.

Thin understory trees and prescribe burn to reduce natural and activity fuels and improve forest health. Note: THIS PROJECT WAS FORMERLY TITLED BUFFALO PASS FUELS REDUCTION PROJECT, BUT HAS BEEN RE-NAMED TO BETTER REFLECT PROJECT OBJECTIVES.

Closure of 15 mine sites that are considered physical hazards.

This project will be the construction of a small horse corral within the Rito Hondo Forest Service Administrative horse pasture just north of the Bighorn Corral on FDR 103.

Stabilize actively eroding head-cuts at three sites along the Treasure Pass Diversion Ditch

The proposed project would use ground-based logging systems for commercial timber harvesting on approximately 722 acres.

The proposed action is to reroute 3 sections of the Tewksberry ATV trail for a total of 1 mile. The reroutes would be constructed to ATV trail specifications with tread no wider than 50", and would reduce resource damage and soil erosion.

The sanitation units (230 acres) will harvest dead and dying Douglas fir sawtimber and non-sawtimber using ground-based harvesting systems. After commercial harvest is complete, firewood gathering commercial/personal may be allowed.

The proposed action consists of sanitation harvest of Douglas-fir in western spruce budworm impacted stands to reduce the presence of insects and disease.

PROPOSAL IS TO REISSUE A NEW SPECIAL USE PERMIT AT THE SAME ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS SITE FOR THE SAME INFRASTRUCTURE ALREADY IN PLACE, PLUS 2 NEW (1,000 GALLON) PROPANE TANKS (ON CONCRETE BLOCKS) AND 1 NEW SOLAR PANEL PEDESTAL.

Implementation of a 1 year or less over the snow motorized closure order for an area approximately 550 acres northwest of US highway 17 Cumbres Pass area below Windy Point.

Analysis for grazing reauthorization

The Forest has 87 applications for Ditch Bill Easements. This action involves authorizing historical facilities that qualify under the Ditch Bill. As of FY2014 there are 10 remaining applications to process.

Issuance of a ten year outfitter and guide permit to Adventure Cycling Association to authorize multiple cycling tours to operate annually on National Forest System Lands across the Rocky Mountain Region.

Viaero has submitted applications for a cellular communication corridor comprised of five sites on National Forest System land.

SLVREC/Ciello powerlines, fiber optic line and access roads have been permitted under multiple authorizations that have all expired. The proposed action is to reauthorize under a 'master authorization' for a new term.

CDOT operates a rock storage area two miles southwest of South Fork, Colorado in the S1/2 of Sec. 9, T. 39 N., R. 3 E., NMPM, Rio Grande County, Colorado. The authorized area is approximately 13.06 acres and the Forest is considering reauthorization.

The Special Use Authorization for Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW%u2019s) motorized access to a storage shed and water diversions near Piedra Pass has expired. It is proposed to reauthorize under a new special use permit for a new term.

Silvicultural treatments, including prescribed fire, would improve forest health and vegetation conditions for deer and elk, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife species (including northern goshawk).

Maintain the vegetative improvements and protect the original investment on 540 acres of public land winter range using mastication as a mechanical treatment.

It is proposed to amend the McWilliams Forest Road Special Use permit to a Private Driveway Special Use Permit for the remainder of the term. Also authorized is the addition of a gate to manage unauthorized use of the non-system road.

Forest Plan Revision

It is proposed to authorize the use of a seasonally restricted Forest System Road for the purpose of year-round access to private property.

The Rio Grande National Forest proposes to re-authorize three stream gaging stations owned and operated by the Colorado Division of Water Resources. The stations are located near the trailheads on Cotton Creek, Wild Cherry Creek and San Isabel Creek.

Reauthorization of a spring development and water transmission line per the decree in Division 3 Case No. 86CW0011. The current special use authorization expires on December 31, 2018.

Within the harvest footprint the proposed project would use ground-based logging systems for commercial timber harvesting(785 ac.),shelterwood removal(756 ac.)and salvage cutting(29 ac.). Up to 1.5 mi. of roads may be constructed for timber removal.

The Summitville Interchange proposes the conveyance of 31 mineral survey fractions under the Small Tracts Act. The USFS would acquire 3 parcels at approximately 71 acres.

An interchange of 3.42 acres to resolve an encroachment, a sale of 1.32 acres to resolve an encroachment, and sales of 0.1, 0.48, 1.33, 6.98 and 12.56 acres to relieve the U. S. of mineral fractions and provide a more manageable boundary.

A water well will be drilled in the vicinity of Schilling Springs, which is located north of Terrace Reservoir. The water will be pumped into a 12,000 gallon storage tank with a gravity flow to drinkers.

The Rio Grande National Forest is proposing to conduct a hand thinning fuels treatment east of Crestone, CO along the northern boundary of the Baca subdivision in T43N R12E Section 8.

Convey 81.25 acres of NFS land to Mineral County, Colorado pursuant to the Townsite Act of July 31, 1958 (72 Stat. 438; 7 U.S.C 1012a; 16 U.S.C. 478a. The parcel is partially encumbered by the Mineral County landfill.

07/19/2018 a new draft decision was released based on the Alt 3 ANILCA action alternative. The Rio Grande National Forest is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement to analyze the effects of the proposed Village at Wolf Creek land exchange.

Wildlife, forest, and range improvement/hazardous fuels treatment project. Treatments will include hand thinning of selected ponderosa pine and Douglas Fir stands with prescribed fire after thinning and in applied to unthinned stands.

The current special use authorization for the Park Cow Camp expired on December 31, 2017. The Forest is considering the proposal to reauthorize the cow camp with a new special use authorization for a new term.

This project is Cancelled and has been brought forward and updated as of June 20, 2019. This project will be referred to as the Burnt Gulch and Major Creek AML Closure project on the RGNF Saguache RD.

The projects will improve big game winter range, re-establish aspen while also removing a forest product, reduce fuels, and to improve the overall health of timber stands by removing understory trees heavily impacted by western spruce budworm.

Repair existing dam, spillway, and canal

Proposed is access to private property consisting of numerous patented mining claims. Some of these lodes are separated by narrow strips of NFS land. The RGNF would be authorizing the crossing of these strips for the purpose of legal access.

Humphrey's dam is regulated by the FERC and they are requiring the dam owners to install a repeater to ensure emergency communication in the extremely unlikely event of a dam failure. The proposed action is to authorize a repeater.

The Rio Grande Fishing Club has proposed the use 2,600 feet of existing road across National Forest System lands for the purpose of legal access to private property.

The proposed action is to reauthorize the occupancy and use of NFS for an archery range for a five year period.

Reauthorization of legal access through a special use permit. The current authorization expires on December 31, 2018.

The Divide Ranger District is proposing to salvage dead and dying spruce from up to 1,951 acres in the Groundhog Park area, located about 16 miles northwest of Del Norte, Colorado. This could produce 21,200 cubic feet of sawtimber.

The Divide Ranger District is proposing to salvage up to 4,100 acres of dead and dying Engelmann spruce trees in the Del Norte Peak area. Approximately 48,750 hundred cubic feet (CCF) of Engelmann spruce sawtimber may be salvaged with this project

The project is proposing to treat up to 430 acres by underburning mixed conifer to promote re-sprouting of aspen and to stimulate growth of understory grasses, forbs, and shrubs for wildlife habitat improvement.

Treat by using salvage harvest, bark beetle infested lodgepole pine trees in and adjacent to the Luders Campground.

CDOT will be applying for a permit to continue to use an existing storage area on La Manga Pass. The existing site is for gravel and waste rock storage related to maintenance of Highway 17.

Develop a water source on the Platoro Cattle & Horse Allotment

A water well will be drilled in the vicinity of Cat Creek, which is located north of Terrace Reservoir. The water will be pumped into a storage tank with a gravity flow to drinkers.

Four earth dams for water collection will be constructed in the area known as the Triangle, just north of Terrace Reservoir. Construction is an earthen dug-out area with a dam and a spillway treated with salt to seal the bottom.

Proposal to elevate a gully crossing between Bear Creek and Sheep Creek Subdivision for emergency egress for vehicles.

Salvage dead and dying trees resulting from spruce beetles and replant seedlings, as needed.

CDoT will be applying for a permit for existing groundwater monitoring & remediation wells, and drill possibly more wells,on Wolf Creek Pass. The wells are to remediate an existing dissolved-phase petroleum hydrocarbon plume related to their facility

The Newsom's are seeking legal access for their existing driveway, 150 feet of which cross National Forest System land.

CURRENT PERMIT HAS EXPIRED. PROPOSAL IS TO REAUTHORIZE AN EXISTING BURIED WATER PIPELINE THAT MOVES WATER FROM A DIVERSION DAM ON THE ROARING FORK OF GOOSE CREEK, ACROSS FOREST SERVICE LANDS TO HAY PRESS LAKE, LOCATED ON PRIVATE LANDS.

THIS PERMIT HAS EXPIRED. THE PROPOSAL IS TO REISSUE THE PERMIT AUTHORIZING THE VERY SAME EXISTING CABIN TO REMAIN ON PUBLIC LANDS. THIS CABIN IS USED FOR MAINTAINING THE CONTINENTAL RESERVOIR DAM AND ADJACENT IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE.

THE PERMIT HAS EXPIRED. THE PROPOSAL IS TO REISSUE A PERMIT FOR THE SAME 1/4 OF A MILE LONG, ACCESS ROAD ACROSS NATIONAL FOREST LANDS. THIS IS A ROAD THE RESERVOIR COMPANY USES TO ACCESS THE WORKINGS OF THE CONTINENTAL RESERVOIR DAM.

THIS PERMIT HAS EXPIRED. PROPOSAL IS TO REISSUE THIS PERMIT TO AUTHORIZE THE SAME EXISTING GRAVEL PIT LOCATED ON NATIONAL FOREST LAND AND USED BY THE SANTA MARIA RESERVOIR COMPANY TO STORE MINERAL MATERIALS.

THIS PERMIT HAS EXPIRED. PROPOSAL IS TO REISSUE ANOTHER SPECIAL USE PERMIT FOR THE SAME EXISTING BRIDGE THAT CROSSES RED MOUNTAIN CREEK TO ACCESS THE WILLIAM BIEBER PRIVATE LAND HOLDINGS AT THE END OF FOREST SERVICE ROAD 526

THE PROPOSAL IS TO REISSUE A SPECIAL USE PERMIT TO CENTURY-TEL AUTHORIZING THEIR EXISTING BURIED FIBER-OPTIC LINE. THIS LINE FOLLOWS US HIGHWAY 160 FROM THE PASS CREEK TUNNEL TO THE WOLF CREEK SKI AREA

Salvage dead and dying Engelmann spruce to recover economic value and reduce fuels adjacent to private land

This is stage two of a 5-year plan to explore for minerals in the Creede mining district. The proposal is to drill a number of exploration holes along historically productive structures.

Permit the inundation of 17.52 acres of National Forest System lands that lie outside Colorado Parks and Wildlife's easement for Beaver Park Reservoir.

The proposed action is to harden the boat ramps and install rock deflector structures that extend into the channel and provide protection to the stream bank and create a low-velocity area at four existing put-ins on the upper Rio Grande river.

The purpose of this project is to provide water developments for big game species in an area with little available water during the late spring through fall. This will increase the use of the area and provide relief for neighboring private lands.

The proposed action is to issue a new authorization for Fun Valley horse day rides to replace an expired authorization. There is no change in authorized locations, activities, or service days.

Mineral County Fair Board is proposing one-day ATV and a horse fun rides on National Forest System Roads north of Creede, CO. The proposed action is to issue five-year permits for these events.

The proposed action is to issue a new special use permit to Offroad Recovery Service, LLC. This proposed permit will allow for use and occupancy of approved OHV routes on the Divide District for the purpose of retrieving abandoned or disabled OHVs.

The proposed action is to designate three new gravel pits for USFS administrative use

The project is planned to improve big game habitat, stimulate aspen recruitment, provide a wood product, return the area to its historic fire regime by reducing hazardous fuels and would help with overall health and resiliency of the stand.

The Divide Ranger District is proposing to salvage approximately 1,000 acres of dead and dying Engelmann spruce trees near Hanson's Mill, east of Creede, Colorado. Approximately eight million board feet of Engelmann spruce may be salvaged.

Use certified blasters to fell dead trees within 3/4 of a tree length around the Spruce Lakes in the Weminuche Wilderness to mitigate the potential for the spillways to clog and minimize the threat of the dams overtopping and failing.

Wolf Creek Ski Area (WCSA) has proposed a project to construct the Meadow Lift, a multi-use facility at the top of the lift, ski trails, and provide access via a pedestrian bridge (magic carpet conveyance).

The proposed action is to salvage harvest up to 250 acres of dead Engelmann spruce in order to recover economic value in Forest Plan Management Area Prescription 5.13, Forest Products.

The purpose of this project is to remove the obsolete infrastructure from the Mix Lake Picnic site, remove FSR 246.1A as a Forest Service system route and to remove the Mix Lake Picnic site ID#: 35144 as a developed recreation site from any inventory

PROPOSAL IS TO ALLOW THE US ARMY TO CONDUCT HIGH ELEVATION HELICOPTER TRAINING (takeoffs/landings) IN THE SNOW MESA AREA OUTSIDE OF DESIGNATED WILDERNESS. THE TRAINING WOULD BE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS, OVER A 5 YEAR PERIOD.

Exploration corridor extension along FS Road 505 totaling 9/10 of a mile.

The Divide Ranger District is proposing to salvage approximately 3,350 acres of dead and dying Engelmann spruce trees near Blue Park located 10 miles northwest of South Fork, CO.

It is proposed to reissue Valley Communication's existing communications site lease at the Agua Ramon Communications Site for a new 30 year term.

Analysis to reissue Valley Communications' lease on Saguache Peak and the replacement of both their building and tower. Tower height is proposed to increase from 80 feet to 130 feet.

A hydro-axe would be used to mulch trees less than eight inches in diameter to improve forest health and improve wildlife habitat on approximately 410 acres of mixed conifer within 4 potential units.

The proposed action is to issue new special use authorizations for recreation-related outfitting and guiding on the Divide District. Authorizations may be for up to 10 years.

The proposed action is to authorize the use of existing motorized National Forest System trails and roads for a two-day motorcycle event. The event will be based on private land. The authorization may be issued for up to five years.

The proposed action is to authorize the use of a National Forest System trail for a one-day foot race that includes catch-and-release fishing. The authorization may be issued for up to five years.

The proposed action is to authorize the use of National Forest System roads and trails north of Creede, CO for a one-day pack burro race and a one-day mountain bike race. The races may be authorized for up to five years.

Proposed action is to reissue a 10-year priority outfitting and guiding permit for Prewitt Outfitters. Permittee is in full compliance and there are no changes to the scope of activities.

CDot will be applying in early 2012 to renew two special use permits: La Manga workshop and storage area; Wolf Creek workshop and storage area.

The proposed action is to replace the Million Dam earthen spillway approach section with concrete and then to stabilize the rip rap in the spillway channel

SFRP LLC is proposing a two-day motorcycle enduro event on existing motorized trails with untimed segments on National Forest System Roads south of Del Norte. The event base area would be on NFS land.

he Rio Grande National Forest (RGNF) is planning to evaluate the environmental impacts of a mineral materials free use permit for the Colorado Department of Transportation at the site that they are illegally occupying along La Manga Pass.

The proposed action is to use crews to prune over-mature mountain mahogany and thin pinyon-juniper in the Pinos Creek and Twin Mountain areas for big game transitional and winter range.

Salvage dead and dying trees resulting from spruce beetles and replant the area as needed.

Proposed action is to renew the Hinsdale Haute Route special use permit for the Colorado Trail Friends and Fawn Lakes Yurts on Jarosa Mesa. The permit would be renewed for a 10-year term.

The proposed action to authorize the Rebel Mine plan of operations for one year. The plan includes no additional surface disturbance and maintains existing mitigations.

The Rio Grande National Forest proposes to change the maintenance and use level of approximately 1 mile segment of Forest Road 781 from open to public motor vehicle use maintenance level 2, to maintenance level 1, closed to motor vehicle use.

The Saguache District proposes to burn 132 acres of spruce bark beetle killed Engelmann spruce within Saguache Park to regenerate aspen.

Contruct two wells for livestock water improvements in the Saguache Park Allotment to provide reliable water for livestock and wildlife.

To eliminate inadequate parking and reduce or eliminate private property access issues, the Saguache Ranger District would like to move the trailhead to the more adequate facility at the Liberty Road Trailhead.

The Divide Ranger District is proposing to salvage up to 250 acres of dead and dying Engelmann spruce trees in the South Rock Creek drainage, southwest of Monte Vista, CO. Approximately 1.75 MBF (3,500 CCF) of Engelmann spruce may be salvaged.

The Saguache Ranger District is proposing to salvage up to 1101 acres of dead and dying Engelmann spruce trees northwest of Saguache, Colorado. Approximately six million board feet of Engelmann spruce may be salvaged.

A permit would be reissued to Payne Outfitting for outfitting and guiding. Permits to groom snowmobile trails would be reissued to the South Fork Powder Busters, Silverthread Outdoor Recreation, and the Snow Country Explorers.

Relocate approximately 32 miles of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail off of Forest Service roads. Proposed trail location is at or near the actual divide. Up to 3 trail heads will be constructed along the new section of trail.
